On the first Monday of the month players from the orchestra and their guests perform short lunchtime concerts at The Atkinson on Lord Street – cake and coffee served from 12.30pm music commences at 1.00pm. So why not take a short break for some easy listening over a cup of tea or coffee?

  • Old and New with the Dell’Arte String Quartet

Captive Thoughts – Wendy Dickinson

An evocative, bold and romantic new work that explores through music what it is like to have a nagging thought you cannot escape from.

Borodin String Quartet No. 2 in D major

Written in 1881 and said to have been dedicated to Borodin’s wife Ekaterina Protopova as a 20th anniversary gift evoking the couple’s first meeting in Heidelberg. You will recognise the famous third movement ‘Notturno’.

Our friends from Manchester the Hope Trio will perform a programme for winds including Peter Hope, Poulenc and Glinka. Prepare to be amazed!

  • The cello world of Jacques Offenbach and David Popper

Some of Dell’Arte’s cellists and their pianist come together to play music by two composers who come from similar backgrounds as both of their fathers were Synagogue cantors. Another unusual but accessible lunchtime concert for you.

  • Till Eulenspiegel

A performance of Grotesque musicale: Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche (Opus 48) by Richard Strauss is performed here in a lively arrangement by Franz Hasenoerhrl for violin, clarinet, horn, bassoon and contrabass.

A moment of relaxation with Franz Berwald’s lovely septet for strings and winds makes a perfect antidote.

  • Seiber and Mozart Serenades

Serenades for wind ensemble from two very different but great composers. Mozart may be familiar but be prepared to have fun with Hungarian composer Matyas Seiber.

The very famous concerto by Bach for two violins played here as a trio using piano accompaniment in a chamber music setting – with maybe a little Vivaldi as a surprise.
